Qualified Opinion Included in State of Ohio Audit

Auditor of State Keith Faber today released the 2018 audit of the City of Youngstown. The audit contained multiple findings including deficiencies, material weaknesses in internal controls, and noncompliance that have resulted in a $4.4 million finding for adjustment.

Butler Township trustees and the fiscal officer owe $21,776 for having taxpayers pick up the tab for their share of the state pension fund, as issued in a 2009-2010 audit released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

The school treasurer of the now-closed Nu Bethel Center of Excellence received more than four times his authorized salary, according to the closeout audit of the school released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

“Plain and simple: this money must be returned to the citizens of Gratis," Auditor of State Dave Yost said, referring to $62,000 that is missing or was misspent in the Village of Gratis.

Village of Smithfield Audit Released Today

Lax controls at the Village of Smithfield led to $60,346 in findings for recovery issued in the 2008-2009 audit released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

“This is a heck of a mess,” Auditor Yost said. “Closed or not, the leadership of this school must be held responsible, and the money must be returned to the people of Ohio.”

$38,815 in Findings for Recovery Issued

“Just because you got elected doesn’t mean you can get taxpayers to pay your green fees,” Auditor Yost said. “This is wrong and he doesn’t get a mulligan.”

More than $75,000 in unaccounted for Medicaid spend-down payments were identified in the audit of Warren County released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

“The new safeguards put in place by the sheriff are a step in the right direction to prevent public dollars from going missing in the future,” Auditor Yost said. “My office will support BCI in its efforts to ensure this money is recovered.”

“Accurate financial reporting is crucial for any local government to be accountable to its citizens,” Auditor Yost said. “No records, no accountability.”

A deliberate scheme of issuing then voiding receipts for court fees, fines and other transactions has resulted in a finding for recovery in the amount of $17,222 in a financial audit released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

Following public reports of verbal sparring among state and local elections officials during the weekend, Auditor of State Dave Yost expressed concern Monday about protecting both the integrity of elections and the public’s faith in the electoral process.

“What possible public purpose could there be in the purchase of boxer shorts?” Auditor Yost said. “The lack of documentation raises questions about these transactions. Catawba Island needs to make changes to reassure their community that they are receiving the most efficient and effective government for their tax dollars.”

“This is barely better than shoebox accounting,” Auditor Yost said. “While the audits are finally complete, they are hardly reassuring about the fiscal or managerial integrity of this school.”

“When potential fraud is brought to my office’s attention, we take the allegations seriously,” Auditor Yost said. “A school program to help struggling students must operate above reproach, and we will investigate this situation to ensure Columbus students are receiving the assistance they should.”

“Good government depends on good bookkeeping,” Auditor Yost said. “While I am pleased that Roswell’s audits were able to be completed, these reports clearly show that the village must tighten its controls to provide accurate and clean records for the people of Roswell.”

No new taxes were levied to help bring East Cleveland City School District out of fiscal emergency status today. Auditor of State Dave Yost will be on hand to officially release the district from fiscal emergency during the final Financial Planning and Supervision Commission meeting at 6:30 PM today at Shaw High School, 15320 Euclid Avenue.
